Each plate is cut for a specific aircraft class: a VFR trainer, a complex single, a twin, or an IFR panel with knob cutouts. Swap the plate and the panel matches a different airplane.

This is what makes the system modular. A device can start as a 172 steam-gauge trainer and become a twin or glass panel later without rebuilding the frame.
